How to Jumpstart a Dead Truck Battery
Are you stuck because of a dead truck battery? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Here’s how to jumpstart a dead truck battery and get back on your way.
Gather Necessary Tools
Before you begin with the task, make sure you have the following tools:
- Jumper cables
- A running vehicle (preferably of similar size)
- Your truck with the dead battery
Position Vehicles Correctly
First, park the vehicles close enough for the jumper cables to reach both batteries but not touching each other. Turn off both vehicles and engage their parking brakes. Open the hoods and locate the batteries.
Connect Jumper Cables
Begin by connecting one end of the red jumper cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery. Connect the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal of the working battery. Then, connect one end of the black jumper cable to the negative terminal of the working battery. Finally, attach the other end of the black cable to an unpainted metal surface on your truck, away from the battery.
Start the Working Vehicle
Start the working vehicle and let it stay idle for a few minutes. This allows some charge to transfer to the dead battery.
Attempt to Start Your Truck
Try to start your truck. If the vehicle doesn’t start immediately, wait a moment and try again. If your truck starts, let it run for at least 15-20 minutes to ensure the battery gets charged adequately.
Disconnecting Jumper Cables
Once your truck is running, disconnect the jumper cables in reverse order: remove the black cable from your truck first, then the black cable from the working vehicle. Next, remove the red cable from the working vehicle and lastly, from your truck.
Additional Tips and Safety Measures
If jumpstarting doesn’t work, it might be time to call a truck repair service. It’s crucial to handle batteries with care as they can be hazardous.
